Dancing on the Water
NEW MARITI ME PAINTINGS BY LOUIS GUARNACCIA
AT CAVALIER GALLERY
By Joellen Adae

Twenty new maritime paintings by Nantucket’s own Louis Guarnaccia will dominate the walls of Cavalier Gallery at 7 Salem Street from June 13th through the 28th. The exhibition, Guarnaccia’s third solo show to date at Cavalier, will also feature a limited selection of works completed within the last three years. A reception with the artist will be held Saturday, June 18th from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., with refreshments compliments of Nantucket Vineyards.

Guarnaccia’s newest group of maritime works tells the story of a mid-career artist who has truly found his niche. There is a confidence in the brushstrokes, a tightness of composition and an accuracy of subject matter which combine to portray a painter who is rapidly becoming a master of his craft. Such confidence, inspired by a loving familiarity with sailing vessels and the sea which carries them, has in turn inspired a fast-growing group of collectors from across the country. In the five years since Guarnaccia began to paint full-time, discipline, talent and residence on Nantucket, known for its ongoing love affair with the arts, have each contributed to his substantial success.

In this series of paintings, Guarnaccia focuses once again on Nantucket’s famous Opera House Cup Regatta, a tradition begun in 1973 in which classic single-hulled wooden sailboats compete in a race around the island on the third Sunday in August. With accuracy born of close study, he captures the majesty of these superbly-crafted boats, whose beauty is surpassed only by the nature which surrounds them. Coatue Light, an exquisite 30 by 40-inch canvas, is a perfect example of nature’s dominance. The magnificent geometric forms of two classic sailboats in the foreground are set against a sky ablaze with the last light of day. Guarnaccia’s signature golds and oranges warm the sky and reflect on the waves, which the viewer can almost hear lapping against the sides of the ships as they head home to harbor.

In Dancing on the Water, a 40 x 60 canvas which lends its title to the exhibition, Guarnaccia paints a close-up view of a competing ship cutting through the water. Here there seems to be an essential harmony among sails, sky and sea, and the drama of the race is dominant. Guarnaccia instinctively balances the blues of ocean and sky with the rich ochres of the vessel’s bow. Other paintings in the show depict moonlight over Old South Wharf, cottages in ‘Sconset and boats along the shoreline.

Cavalier Gallery is proud to be Louis Guarnaccia’s exclusive representative on Nantucket since 2001. About Cavalier Gallery

Founded in 1986, Cavalier Galleries & Sculpture Garden was originally located at Landmark Square in Stamford, CT, where Mr. Cavalier began exhibiting the works of emerging and established artists. Notable exhibitions during the gallery's early years include "The Borglums of Fairfield County," a retrospective of the art of Gutzon and Solon Borglum and the first American exhibition of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.
In 1993, Mr. Cavalier developed the nationally-acclaimed exhibition Stamford Sculpture Walk, a program dedicated to public interaction, education, enrichment and enjoyment. The Stamford Sculpture Walk
featured large to monumental scale works by world-renowned sculptors installed throughout the downtown area and in Stamford Town Center. Mr. Cavalier’s involvement with the Stamford Sculpture Walk culminated with the 1999 exhibition "Important Sculptors of the Late Twentieth Century" which included major works by artists such as Moore, Botero, Smith, Oldenburg, Segal and Nevelson. These important sculptors' various approaches were combined to create an exciting, interesting and complete survey of late twentieth century sculpture.
Cavalier Galleries, Inc. moved its main gallery to its present location at 405 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut in 1994. In the spring of 2000, Cavalier Galleries opened a large gallery and sculpture garden in Nantucket, Massachusetts at 7 Salem Street. In autumn 2004, Cavalier Galleries entered the nexus of the art world with a ground floor gallery at 1100 Madison Avenue (and 82nd St.) in New York City. Paintings and sculpture by contemporary artists working in a representational style have become the gallery's main theme. The gallery also maintains outdoor sculpture exhibitions of large-scale sculpture, both non-representational and figural, in Greenwich and Nantucket.
Cavalier Galleries, Inc. services include art consultation and the acquisition and installation of works in corporate, public and private settings. Artist commissions, site-specific work, portraiture and sculpture preservation and restoration are available. As a member of the Appraisers Association of America, Mr. Cavalier is qualified to appraise contemporary works as well as American and European 20th century sculpture.
